Getting just a glimpse of a young black girl and her family growing up in Mississippi, "Song of the Trees" is based on an actual story that occurred in the author's family. Cassie Logan along with her three brothers, youthfully unaware of the harshness that white men placed on their family, will soon learn lessons of a cruel and unreasonable world just because of the color of their skin. The author, Mildred D. Taylor, guides the reader into a period of our history that some may not understand or that some have chosen to forget.
